EXT. JAPANESE HARBOR – NAGASAKI -- SUNRISE
People still ask me,
“Was Seidou a good man,
or was there simply no good in him at all?”
INT. A TRADITIONAL JAPANESE HOUSEHOLD
Plain living quarters. SEIDOU sits on a floor mat.
Seidou meditates. He holds a rosary bead.
A JAPANESE MAN, young, stumbles in, laughing, holding a Geisha and Sake. The Japanese Man falls silent.
Seidou?! What are you doing here? I thought that Tatsujin-
Seidou rises and strikes the Japanese Man a fatal blow with his sword.
Seidou sheathes his sword and bows in respect.
Geisha screams, huddled in a corner as SEIDOU exits.
Fade to Black.
Japanese countryside, a Japanese village bustling with activity.
EXT. NARAKU -- Day
A Thriving Japanese Village
Various shots of SESUI running down the city streets, not in fear, but in excitement. Passes by various familiars and
waves hello, chased by dogs, etc. SESUI turns a corner too fast and bumps into YAKIMOCHI, one of his father’s associates.
YAKIMOCHI wears a traditional Japanese hat, shading his eyes.
LOW-ANGLE shot looking into YAKIMOCHI’s darkened eyes.
Watch where you are headed, little Tenshi.
Sesui looks up. He is too afraid to respond or apologize. Yakimochi awkwardly pats Sesui on the shoulder.
I think you’d better get home. It’s getting late.
Sesui runs off.
EXT. THE TENSHI HOUSEHOLD
SESUI approaches the house from the dirt road and is ambushed by his older brother, MUZAI. The two have a mock battle
with sticks and fists until their father, Seidou, walks up the road. The two boys wait for their father to pass, none making
eye contact. Muzai and Sesui stand motionless until Seidou enters the household, drop their sticks, and enter behind him.
INT. THE TENSHI HOUSEHOLD -- DINING AREA
The two boys sit kneeling on their mats, chatting idly while waiting for their food. MITSUKAI, their mother, serves dinner.
Sesui, get your father. His food is ready.
Sesui rises and runs off.
INT. THE TENSHI HOUSEHOLD -- HALL/MASTER LIVING QUARTERS
A dim, wood hallway.
Sesui stops running down the hall. He looks in awe at Seidou who kneels before a sword-rack.
Seidou sheathing and resting the blades.
CLOSE-UP of the blades.
Father- dinner is prepared.
After a moment Seidou finishes laying his weapons down.
Thank-you, Seisui. I will be there in just a moment.
CLOSE-UP of the blades and a cross.
INT. THE TENSHI HOUSEHOLD – THE BOY’S BEDROOM
A clean room with two sleeping mats in the middle. Seisui and Muzai kneel and pray before retiring.
Muzai? What exactly does father do?
He works for Mr. Tatsujin.
I know that, but what does he DO?
He does missions and stuff. Now shut up- I’m trying to get some sleep.
Missions? Like, dangerous missions?
Yes, dangerous missions. Now be quiet Sesui.
Boys! We have a big day tomorrow! You both have lessons and then we are expected at Mugen’s funeral! Now get
EXT. NARAKU GRAVEYARD -- SUNSET
The graveyard is shadowed by the Tatsujin estate.
A grasshopper skitters among the graves. Squashed by Tatsujin’s sandal.
Much of the town is gathered for Mugen’s funeral.
A priest speaks prayers.
Tatsujin and Yakimochi watch the casket being lowered ominously.
Sesui remains curiously reverant.
INT. TATSUJIN ESTATE -- MAIN HALL
The funeral party is bustling and exciting.
Tatsujin calms the party.
Everyone- everyone please! Thank you. I’m so glad you could all make it tonight, I’m sure Mugen would
be pleased. I never got to know the man as much as I would have liked, but I don’t think anyone can forget his
little incident at the waterhole.
(The crowd laughs)
Ah- Mugen. It’s always such a shame to lose someone so young, but I think I’ll leave you all with
a man that knew Mugen much better than myself: his brother, Jin.
The crowd claps.
JIN is nervous and distressed. He awkwardly fidgets with his speech paper.
Yes, well, thank you all very much. I- I just wanted to say that Mugen was my brother, and the best of men. I don’t
recall an instant where he didn’t remain true, true to himself-
Yakimochi and Seidou exchange glances.
-And I know that he seemed impulsive at times, even brash, but that’s how Mugen lived. I’d like to
thank Tatsujin and his son for their hospitality tonight and I’d also like to thank them for making us all feel
so close, because after all, we don’t get to think for ourselves anymore. No- we’ll leave that to the
Yakimochi and Seidou give each other affirmative looks then make their way through the crowd to carry Jin away.
Tatsujin suddenly steps in.
Well everyone, why don’t we all give Jin a hand? Yes, it’s been a long day for us all, but feel free
to make yourselves at home and help yourselves to the food and drink!
The party recommences.
Sesui follows Seidou, Yakimochi, and Jin out of the room.
EXT. NARAKU GRAVEYARD – NIGHT
Yakimochi and Seidou escort Jin to a concealed location in the graveyard. Sesui follows.
What the hell was that, Jin?!
Just gonna’ kill me now, eh? Do me in like Mugen?!
No one’s going to do anything, Jin. I think you need to calm down for a minute. Think about it.
Yeah, no more smart ass shit, Jin. You sounded like you were trying to bring us all down back there.
That’s enough Yakimochi. Jin, we’ll be giving you a visit tomorrow. We hope you’ll be in
a better mood- there are some matters of business Tatsujin needs to address with you, especially since the passing of your
Jin cries and huddles next to a grave.
Nothing stupid, Jin.
We’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Otaku.
Sesui quickly escapes back to the party.
INT. TATSUJIN ESTATE
Sesui returns. Approaches Tatsujin and Muzai, who are engaged in a game of dice.
Oh! Ya’ got me again there, little man! Well hello Sesui! Tell me now, how old are you again?
Eight, almost nine.
And tell me, are you as good as Muzai here at dice?
The three laugh.
Seidou and Yakimochi enter. Tatsujin notices.
Tell you what boys, I’m gonna have to go, but a true man always pays his dues. You’ve earned this
Tatsujin hands Muzai a silver piece then leaves to talk with Yakimochi and Seidou.
Where did you go?
I was following father.
What!? What were you thinking?! Did he see you?
Sesui, never do that again. You’ll probably end up getting the both of us in trouble somehow.
I just wanted to see what father does.
Well don’t. Father works for Mr. Tatsujin. That’s all.
Tatsujin and Seidou start to play a piece on the piano. The crowd quiets down.
The two play a slow, somber piece. Tatsujin plays the bass part, Seidou the treble.
Afterwards Tatsujin gives Seidou a heartfelt hug.
The crowd claps.
Yakimochi does not clap. He laughs to himself.
What’s funny, Mr. Yakimochi?
It’s all so friggin’ hysterical, kid.
Cut to black.
EXT. NARAKU VILLAGE -- NEXT DAY
Sesui runs through the town towards home.
Sesui sees his father walking through town.
We’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Otaku.
Sesui follows Seidou.
Seidou walks to Jin’s Warehouse. Yakimochi is waiting outside. He leans next to a doorway. The two enter and
close the door behind them.
Sesui peers in through a crack in the door frame.
INT. OTAKU WAREHOUSE
A bare warehouse room with a table and two chairs in the center. A few crates line the far wall. Jin sits in a chair at
the table with his two guardsmen nearby.
Mr. Otaku, we’d like to offer our condolences about your brother, but you know that you know that he was caught
up in business he shouldn’t have been. That’s behind us now. Today we’re here to talk about
your promotion to the head of this enterprise.
Your stinkin’ brother almost got us all in a lot of trouble. You should be grateful we didn’t tear
this craphole apart. –let you run this piece, hah.
Mugen was honorable. I- I see that now. You and your Tatsujin scum... If only I had given him some support, oh...
Scum? What did you say?
Listen you rat; My father built this town, he built it from the ground up and as far as I’m concerned we all
owe him something. You’ll perform your job and shut-up about all this crap.
I will never follow Tatsujin.
A momentary pause.
Yakimochi decapitates Jin in a single, sudden stroke. Jin’s Guards attack, but Seidou dispatches them in only
a few, swift blows.
Sesui shakes in fear as he looks into the lifeless eyes of Jin’s head.
Jesus Yakimochi! What the hell was that?!
Yakimochi sees Sesui.
EXT. OTAKU WHORF
Sesui panics and runs the wrong way. Seidou and Yakimochi follow. Sesui is cornered against a fence. He clings to it,
cowers down and weeps.
Seidou realizes it’s Sesui.
He one of yours?
Can he keep a secret.
Seidou looks to Sesui.
Good. Let’s get out of here.
Yakimochi sheathes his sword. Seidou walks over and cradles Sesui in his arms.
The three leave.
INT. TENSHI HOUSEHOLD -- DINING AREA -- NIGHT
The Tenshi family sits down to dinner. Everyone eats quietly except Sesui who eats nothing.
Seidou looks up at Sesui.
Sesui followed me to work today.
Mitsukai nearly drops her chopsticks, then looks to Seidou.
Mitsukai continues to eat slowly.
So, how did everything go?
Seidou looks to Sesui.
Sesui rises and leaves the dining area.
I’ll talk to him.
Seidou leaves Mitsukai and Muzai.
